The NTSB is advising that medical experts question truck drivers about sleep apnea, and has sent a letter to the FMCSA about this recommendation. A task force of medical experts is calling for new screening procedures for obstructive sleep apnea among truck drivers of commercial vehicles.

Untreated sleep apnea can:

* Increase the risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and diabetes.

* Increase the risk for or worsen heart failure.

* Make irregular heartbeats more likely

* Increase the chance of having work-related or driving accidents

While I think it's important to treat sleep apnea before it leads to bad health or even worse death, I think there are a lot of things that one should be tested for. And I don't think it's just truck drivers but everyone who should be tested for high blood pressure, irregular heart beat, diabetes, etc. It sounds like they want to prevent truck accidents by treating illnesses that could cause a truck accident but I would argue that regular drivers cause more accidents and are more apt to have a heart attack or other debilitating injury that could cause an accident.
